Keeping our City and Neighborhoods Safe
As a City Councilor and Council President, I have worked closely with our Police Department, Fire Department, and the Building Commissioner to ensure that our public safety team has the resources, training, and equipment it needs to protect and serve the residents of Northampton.

A two-term member of the Committee on Public Safety, I've served on the Police Station Building Committee since 2006 where I helped oversee the siting and design of a much-needed new police facility. When a difficult economy and budget threatened this important community project in 2010, I helped lead the override campaign which 60 percent of the voters approved. I was proud of our community for recognizing the importance of giving the men and women of the Police Department a modern public safety facility.

My Public Safety committee service also included oversight of the planning and implementation of the Northampton Fire Department's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) ambulance program. This initiative has been a major success both in terms of sustaining critical staffing for fire protection and providing city residents with excellent emergency medical response and care.

Ensuring the safety and security of both city residents and the many visitors who make Northampton a vibrant economic and cultural destination will be among my top priorities as Mayor.
