Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Issues
Northampton is well known as a community that welcomes Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender citizens. Each year, Northampton Pride is the first LGBT pride celebration in the nation, and it is fitting that it is held in the most LGBT-friendly community in Western Massachusetts.
The Pride celebration recognizes the progress that's been made in supporting equal rights for LGBT people. But we must also recognize that more work must be done before LGBT citizens have equal rights and opportunities in family life, at work and in retirement. We especially need to prevent bullying and make our schools safe for LGBT youth, and to continue working on equal rights for the transgender members of our community.
I have been an ally of the LGBT community since I was a resident assistant (RA) at UMass/Amherst. I supported LGBT students and tried to be a resource for them. I also taught a course in my dorm on diversity and acceptance, including LGBT issues.
I've continued to be an ally throughout my adult life, working on political issues affecting the LGBT community and volunteering on the campaigns of openly gay candidates like Michael Bardsley and Clare Higgins. Since being elected to the City Council I have marched in Gay Pride every year to express not only my personal support, but also city government's support for the LGBT community.
